Research

Rooted in Arizona, with impact around the globe.

Creating the technologies that will feed and fuel our future.

From optimizing growth conditions in controlled environment agriculture, to finding renewable fuel and feed sources, to developing advanced biosensors, we seek sustainable solutions to feed a growing world population in the face of a changing climate.

Interdisciplinary by nature.

Our research spans laboratories, controlled growth environments and field settings, leading to discoveries that drive the development of efficient, sustainable agricultural practices. Whether for traditional farming or controlled environments, our work optimizes resource use while safeguarding both ecological and human health.

Learn how we're bridging disciplinary boundaries to produce purpose-driven science with real-world impact.

Controlled Environment Agriculture Center (CEAC)

Located three miles north of the main University of Arizona campus, the Controlled Environment Agriculture Center (CEAC) works with students, faculty, community and industry to promote the production of plants and their products - like vegetables and flowers - inside controlled environment structures such as greenhouses, vertical farms and growth chambers. The facility is focused on innovating technologies for the generation of food, bioenergy and bioproducts.  CEAC features teaching and research greenhouses, the Mars-Lunar Greenhouse, the UAqua Farm, the UAg (Vertical) Farm, the University of Arizona Mushroom Lab, and more.

Arizona Experiment Station

Biosystems Engineering faculty and students often conduct research and outreach through the Arizona Experiment Station. From incubation to large-scale experimentation and implementation, the Experiment Station provides the infrastructure for purpose-driven science with real-world impact across its 11 locations state-wide.
