Joel Cuello and Jack Welchert Recognized For Their Algae Research
A small team known as the Atmospherica is made up of Daniel Apai, Joel Cuello, Regis Ferriere, Martain Schlecker, and Jack Welchert, has come together and taken on a great feat. They are harnessing algae to combat climate change. Cuello has patented photobioreactors a cost-effective and efficient way to grow algae with his BE lab. The use of photobioreactors creates a way to grow a tremendous amount of algae in a controlled environment. Both Cuello and Apai have also patented carbon dioxide removal with the use of coccolithophore algae in the photobioreactors. Thus, they have come together in hopes that their design can help in the fight against climate change. They are producing two areas to make sure that the method can confirm the amount of net carbon dioxide taken from the atmosphere. One area will be on the sixth street garage and the other will be at a larger facility Biosphere 2.
